What is Inflamm-aging

Inflamm-aging is described a inflammation that presents on the skin as well as in the body and results in cellular degeneragion or disfunction. Inflammation can affect the skin in several ways namely:

Accelerated Aging: Chronic inflammation can accelerate the ageing process of the skin, leading to the development of fine lines, wrinkles and loss of elasticity.

Decreased collagen production: Inflammation disrupts the production of collagen ( a protein that gives the skin structure and elasticity). Reduced collagen levels can result in thinner and more fragile skin.

Increased sensitivity: Inflammation can cause the skin to become sensitive and more likely to become red and irritated. Conditions such as rosacea and eczema can be exacerbated.

Impared healing: Inflammation can impair the skins ability to effectively heal from wounds and injuries, leading to delayed healing, scar formation and hyperpigmentation.

Your skin’s health and appearance is affected by inflammation in the skin, making it more susceptible to pre mature aging.

Several factors can trigger inflamm-aging which are, but not limited too:

Oxidative Stress: Excessive production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) due to factors like UV radiation pollution, and poor diet.

Chronic infections: Persistent infections whether viral or bacterial will lead to inflammation.

Poor diet: A diet high in processed food, sugar and unhealthy fats.

Lifestyle factors: Smoking, excessive alchohol consumption, lack of excercise and not maintaining a good home skin care routine.

Hormonal Changes: changes in hormone levels, such as those seen on menopause and pre-menopause

Environmental factors: Exposure to environmental pollutants such as pollution and poor air quality

Genetics: Genetic factors can also trigger inflammation

Becoming aware of inflammation and it’s causes is important because it allows to the opportunity to consider how you can affect the outcome of the ageing process.
